Begijnhof

'Het Begijnhof' is a courtyard with almshouses in the city centre of Amsterdam.

Founded in 1346, this is the oldest 'hofje' in the city that still exists today. The oldest, still existing building dates back to 1528.

'Hofjes' were very common in medieval times, to provide security for elderly and religious people.

Because of it's age, the street level in 'het Begijnhof' is almost 1 meter (3 feet) lower than the streetlevel of Amsterdam nowadays.

Measurements: 8 x 4,5 x 3 centimeters (l x w x h).
